Julia: Still Freaking Out Over Her Wikipedia Page

Someone’s a bit concerned about her public image these days, huh? Is it for TK, or Sony?

August 17, 2009

Hi – This is Julia Allison. I’ve hesitated to look at this page for quite some time, because – frankly – it can tend to upset me. It’s skewed heavily towards a dating column I wrote in college, and contains several factual inaccuracies. I’d like to correct them, and hopefully an established user can do so for me. I would greatly appreciate that.

1) My birth name is Julia Allison Baugher, but I would greatly appreciate if my former last name was kept off of my wikipedia. I dropped it after college (five years ago), for a reason – to give my family privacy. They didn’t ask for the attention, and it’s not fair to them. It also isn’t my name anymore. I can’t help that it’s out there, but wikipedia is the first source many turn to, and I would appreciate if it were not easily accessible.

2) You may add my birthdate to the article. I wanted to keep it off for some time, for privacy reasons, but that ship has sailed. I was born February 28th, 1981, and am 28 years of age right now.

YDone miranda 04:21, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

3) I no longer work for Time Out New York. We had a very amicable parting of ways – http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/hot-seat/75741/julia-allison-the-hot-seat-interview – after I completed exactly two years under their employ, as a columnist (May 2007 – May 2009)

4) Prior to that, I was an AM New York columnist from October 2005 – February 2007.

5) Simultaneous to that, I was a monthly columnist for COED for two years. (I also used to do party coverage for the Huffington Post, but I believe you have that in the present tense. I haven’t done any party coverage for them for some time, so past tense would be more accurate.)

6) I am currently the host of NBC New York NonStop’s TMIweekly, co-owed by Next New Networks (of Obama Girl fame)

7) NonSociety is not a “group videoblog.” It’s my lifecasting website, which I founded with TMIweekly co-hosts Meghan Asha and Mary Rambin. Mary has since left NonSociety, although she still hosts TMIweekly with us.

8) I was a full time television pundit for three years, with over 450 appearances on various networks, including MSNBC, CNN, Headline News, Fox, E!, MTV, vh1, NBC, FoxNews. I don’t understand why Fox Business is the only network really mentioned – I did the least work for them, really. I still do appearances (usually about 5-8 a month). My latest appearances (in the last month) were on MSNBC, GMTV in the UK, and MTV’s It’s On with Alexa Chung.

9) I do a ton of speaking engagements on new media and marketing (have spoken at DLD in Munich, keynote at Unilever, MIT’s business school, and Wharton in the fall) and work with various brands as a spokesperson.

10) With regard to my former tv pilot at Bravo, it was shot in July of 2008 with Meghan Asha and Mary Rambin, and called “IT Girls.” Bravo passed on it in February of 2009, instead picking up “NYC Prep.”

11) Finally, I’ve noticed that the articles in the references section are a bit random. Here is a fairly complete list of my press. http://julia.nonsociety.com/main.php?type=press

Okay, I guess that’s about it. This is factual information. All can be verified. I just think it’s important to be correct in what you’re writing about someone, especially a living person.

Thank you very much. If you have any additional questions please email me at Julia@NonSociety.com.

I apologize for not knowing how to format this correctly.

Very sincerely, julia —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 03:17, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Julia. Because you are a person who is the topic of this article, I suggest you contact info-en[at]wikimedia[dot]org if you have personal or private disputes concerning this article. miranda 04:18, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Also, for some of your appearances, per living persons policy, we need reliable sources. miranda 04:21, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Why is she suddenly on a damage control, image revitalization, kick? Is one of her sponsorships dependent upon cleaning up the old image? This is just so silly. Fail Whale.

  2. partypants says:

“I dropped it after college (five years ago), for a reason – to give my family privacy. ”

Her idea of giving her family privacy is to post pictures and information about them on HER OWN BLOG. Julia, just, JUST STOP! FULMINATING RAGE! PARTYPANTS ANGRY! PARTYPANTS SMASH!

    • Dahling says:

I didn’t realize you could just “drop” a last name like that. Did she actually go through legal channels to officially “drop” her last name?

Her dad has to think she’s a complete nitwit. No, seriously, are her parents just really fucking mortified? I especially love how she referenced Big Lawyer Daddy when speaking about her internet bullies.

    • shamoolia says:

If you’re the Hulk, then I’m the Abomination.

      – stop posting dozens of pictures of them on your blog
      – stop posting their full email transcripts
      – stop posting their voicemails
      – stop posting about personal matters like their engagement
      – stop posting about your mother’s weight loss
      – stop posting about your grandmother and mother’s estrangement
      – stop posting about the weddings of family members
      – stop posting personal pictures from holiday gatherings

    • WTH says:

I thought the same thing when I read that. Doesn’t she put up her family menbers’ pics up on her blog frequently, give them public twitter accounts, mention them by name online, disclose where they go to school, where they live, etc.?

And haven’t she and her mom herself nationally publicized their last name by having her edit her college columns and going on tv and other national press to talk it up?

      • Seriously, it was this side of a damn month ago that she was posting pics of her brother and his fiance with some fan of HERS at a bar. Way to distance yourself and give your family privacy you brain damaged peltmonster.

  3. Dr. Gary says:

God I love this photo. It must drive her BATSHIT crazy knowing that it’s still posted on her Wikipedia page.

Although, I do believe she is an even BIGGER fan of this Wiki photo:

Dollars to donuts Sony has seen the multitude of responses regarding their recent ‘spokesperson’ announcement and she’s furiously trying to bury any crap they can find.
Hence the ‘Lets be friends!’ ‘Fix my page!’ and ‘I got lawyer in me!’ (That’s a special nod to anyone who caught the Dave Kerpen pic from a few posts ago.)

My favourite part of the Wikipedia edits is Jim Wales’ justification for deleting any mention of the plagiarism controversy.
I would think a plagiarism scandal (no matter how big) is a fairly notable moment in a self proclaimed journalist’s career, ain’t it?

    Hey Jimbo…your boner is showing.

    • bettedavis says:

Right. And I think Sony will find out quickly that unlike the other spokespeople, this shilling gig is the only thing Julia has going on right now. Former columnist. Former pundit and talking head. Five to eight times a month on cable? Not in 2009, no way. Motivational speaker? Marketing tool? It’s so funny that she leads the Wiki editors to a “fairly complete list” (ha!) of articles her Press page for verification. How would she describe her career to the average person?

  5. The guy on the left wearing the Officer Poncherello glasses is the main reason I love this picture.

  6. Jack the Bulldog says:

Miss UnSmarty Pants sure went on one helluva bender last night! The fauxttorney threats–rather like a high school prank–the endless braying to Wikipedia, the lezbe friends branch to RBNS, and the general twitter insanity. Could Sony have finally have gotten off their asses and unearthed those glaring google footprints? Sorry, Jules, Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t spin your vile history overnight. You do read here, right? And of course I would like you if I met you! But I have met you and found you utterly loathsome.

  8. Dyspeptic2 says:

Just when I think Julia Allison and all her works (term used loosely) are terminally boring, and that I must turn elsewhere for entertainment & lulz, comes a night of seesawing insanity like…well…last night.

And I’m grinning all over again.

  9. diluted brain says:

I just did a quick once over. I did *not* see anything on her plagerism!!! Why is this not on her page? That is factual and if I were interested in hiring her for something, I would want to know.

    • diluted brain says:

In addition, the position of Mayor McCheese is already taken but for future endeavors I was just wondering why it is not posted.

  10. FormerGawkerEmployee says:

    Reposting from thread below:

Looks like Joe, aka Joe-Joe, has been active on the TMI Weekly livestream as well, taking shots at regular RBNS commenters.

The nutbar on the Sony site = Joe-Joe the “law student” = Joe = the former Reblogging Reblogging NS toolbag.

I still suspect Rachel Billow and/or one of JA’s interns.

Also, I think the gals are livestreaming today.

    • flatface says:

I told Joe I was going to sue him… and then i was gonna sue his boyfriend, and make him watch

      • flatface says:

I’m gonna sue Joe’s best friend. And then I’m gonna write about in my journal. And then I’m gonna leave my journal around where Joe can find it. Joe won’t know which is worse: knowing the details of how I sued the daylights out of his best friend… or knowing he can’t admit he knows I sued his boyfriend.

  11. IndianaState says:

That is insane that Wikipedia does not mention Julia Allison’s plagiarism on her page. I think it should easily be one of the top three things that pop up when you google Julia Allison Baugher. Plagiarism, RBNS and the Baugher blog.

BTW, I really miss Baugher. Wonder if her latest round of crazy would be enough to get that blog up and running again?

    • WTH says:

She argued to have it removed it looks like. It’s all in that discussion part I think. I read it when someone here linked to it last night. She guards her wiki page like her Gawker comments it seems, huh? The woman is ON IT!

    • That plagiarism was three months ago. No one cares anymore!

    • uninspiRED. says:

it was removed by jim wales himself. He explains it further up the page:

      [edit] WP:UNDUE
I have removed the bit about the so-called “plagiarism scandal” for a reason of WP:UNDUE. According to the source cited, her column drew notice from “National Public Radio, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, and Fox News Network”. Why did it get such attention? “And she had an irresistible story line for them: Sweet-looking gal writes sexy stuff at one of the country’s most stodgy campuses. Even better, the columnist relies on close attention from her chief editor—her mother, Robin Baugher.”

That sounds interesting… a sex column at a stodgy campus, helped in editing by her mother. I can understand why it got some “puff-piece” attention, and why not?

But the paragraph that was there focused on what sounds to me like a totally “trumped up” scandal. There was an allegation of plagiarism but we are saying she left the paper after the allegation was proven to be false. Well, gee, it sounds to me like it isn’t even a story at all.

If additional reliable sources could be found suggesting that there is more to this than the short mention in the Washington alternative weekly, it seems difficult to include this at all. But in any case, it is certainly wrong to include it as pretty much the sole thing we say about a column that achieved national mentions on other grounds.–Jimbo Wales (talk) 03:45, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

      • uninspiRED. says:

        Favourite bit:
“sounds to me like a totally ‘trumped up’ scandal”

Sounds to me like you care *this much* about truth and credibility on the internets, mr. wales.
Tell me the one again about rachel marsden?

      • Jack the Bulldog says:

Was her flunking her journalism class for these allegations also a “trumped up scandal”?

      • melissa0sue00rbns says:

WTF? They need to be able to prove something is a fact before they can post it … but said-disputed-fact appearing in a second tier newspaper doesn’t count?

Just because the kerfluffle caused by her idiocy wasn’t large enough to merit a mention in a major newspaper (in our nation’s capitol, where very important things happen every day), doesn’t mean it can’t be verified. That guy is kind of a twat.

      • WTH? says:

“If additional reliable sources could be found ”

I think maybe she admitted to it herself in her gawker liveblog the one where she revealed sensitive info about someone else. It should still be there in the comments. That’s a reliable source ain’t it, straight from the horse’s (I’m not going to go there, I haven’t name called yet and I’m not starting now) mouth. I’m not totally sure but pretty sure she admitted to some aspect of the incident. Isn’t it also mentioned in the becoming julia article or no?

  12. Let them eat cupcakes. says:

Is that another Lodwick standing next to her in the picture? If not, it sure could be.

  13. WTH? says:

How thoughtful of her to hand over a “fairly complete” list of press coverage to make wiki. editors lives easier. I’m guessing the “Becoming JA” article might be absent from that list, along with the Gawker Field Guide, the attempt-to-have-a-grapefruit-comped-by-saying-you-work-for-the-WaPo article, the stories about the collelge paper plagiarism accusations and maybe a few select others? But then, if so, well she did warn in advance that the list was only “fairly” complete. I’m sure the self selectled coverage is plenty thorough and balanced anyway so who cares about those other meany articles.

One question on the press pages though: I’m no legal expert so I don’t know but posting copies of articles and images from so many other publications in full on her blog like that? I thought most publications’ copyrights prevented that sort of thing? Am I wrong? If I’m right about the law, then giving her benefit of the doubt, maybe she got permission to do it fro each publication?

Also isn’t it good internet etiquette to link back to an article if you quote it? Espeically if you quote it *in full*? From what I could tell a bunch of her press pieces aren’t linked back to the original pieces at all. I couldn’t find the links at least if there were any. The Gelf piece is just one of several I saw in a few seconds of scanning that were posted in full on her site without links to the orignal.

  14. Anna says:

We should all take a hint from Jules. If I rewrote my career path like she did, it would be way more impressive.

  15. June says:

She fails to mention (of course)

Most of her media coverage was generated by her then employer Star Magazine.

Her reality show was not picked up because it sucked.

She gave up her last name shortly after being accused of plagerism at her university newspaper. If there was concern about her family’s privacy, they wouldn’t be posted all over her site and talked about by her.

She doesn’t speak at a “ton” of conferences.

    • High School Debate Partner says:

“She doesn’t speak at a ‘ton’ of conferences.”

True. Although, in her defense, conferences weigh next to nothing.

    • melissa0sue00rbns says:

She also doesn’t do 5-8 pundit appearances a month. I think it’s clear that Our Lady has a bit of trouble with the truth.

      • shamoolia says:

She “massages the truth” – in her own words. Do you think “massaged truth” would hold up in a court of law, Little Miss I’m Callin’ Daddy Lawyer?

Speaking at Wharton in the fall? Why?

  17. Miss Cast says:

Late to the party, but poor J standing next to a guy whose legs are so skinny, his skinny jeans are almost baggy. Wouldn’t want to be up there myself.

In other news, love that he’s aiming the straw into his mouth and missing. That and the shades make him look charmingly wasted.

  18. LuxI says:

How does one become a tv pundit? Could this freak ding-bat know anything about anything at 28? Cable news is trash.

  19. Omnesion says:

“I can’t help that it’s out there, but wikipedia is the first source many turn to, and I would appreciate if it were not easily accessible.” – Okay…now THAT IS amusing! She has the gall to say she would appreciate it if INFORMATION ABOUT HER WAS NOTTTTT EASILY AVAILABLE???????? LMFAO!!! That’s the ONLY REASON anyone knows who the FUCK YOU ARE Julia!!! You got famous/notorious BECAUSE of the easily available (and eventually plentiful) information about you OUT THERE! LMAO!!!

  20. Omnesion says:

Okay…goddamn…I’m not USUALLYYYYYYYYYYY one to critique another person but…those are some knarled up, beefy, kinda stumpy lookin legs Jules has there in that photo! Awwwwe dayamn!!! LMAO!
